After World War I, the United States felt that it need to give back to all the European Allies that helped us during the war so they went on to continue to pay back their loans and return shipped goods. It became very publicized and a huge problem to the U.S. The U.S. expended more than 7$ billion in government funds and an additional 3$ billion to relief and reconstruction efforts. The total 10$ that was given to the European countires was considered our "war debt". The United States felt as if we owed a debt and believed that anyone that has debt should pay it back no matter the cost, and regardless of the cancellations of the other countires the U.S. still kept giving back.
